Cruising From Cape Liberty, NJ

An advantage of taking a last minute cruise from Port Liberty for Julie and me was the chance to visit our youngest daughter Amy and her fiancé Lukas over brunch in nearby Jersey City.

The historic downtown where they live is very much what I envision when I read about the fun, romantic side of New York City.

Rather than stepping over litter on pedestrian-jammed sidewalks in the nearby big city, it is truly pleasant strolling along clean, airy walkways on the other side of the Hudson River.  Buildings may not be as tall as in Manhattan, but they have the charm found in TV shows like "Friends" and "How I Met Your Mother."

After briefly stopping to drop off fresh vegetables we purchased before deciding to go on a cruise for a week --- never let a veggie go to waste! --- we walked from their condo to a nearby eatery for a delicious breakfast.

We talked about their wedding plans, our upcoming cruise, what other family have been up to, and other casual conversation topics over the meal.  I think we all enjoyed the food and company.

Having just made the drive from Ardmore, I made a point of thanking them for making past treks to come visit us, which I must admit seems like much less of a slog until going through all the turnpike changes and toll booths personally.

We thought about taking trains, especially now that we have our senior discount passes, but because we had booked about 40 hours after paying for our cruise, we decided to go with our more traditional approach.

Lukas made it easier by dropping us off at the cruise port, and then Amy moved the car a couple of times in order to avoid street sweeping days.

Of course, most people catching a cruise won't conveniently have a daughter who lives near the port, and presumably the same is true for Cape Liberty.

Rail supplemented by brief taxis makes a great choice for people who live in the northeast and want an easy escape without parking concerns.  That's likely how we'll do it on our next cruise from Cape Liberty or NYC.

Coming from other parts of the country, Newark Airport is just a hop, skip and a jump --- make that a taxi ride --- from Port Liberty.

It is also a great opportunity to play tourist in New York City before your cruise.  I strongly recommend you check out historic Jersey City, too.

Cruising past the dramatic New York City Skyline is a treat in itself.
