"Don't trust anyone over 30!"

Remember that phrase coined by a UC Berkeley student in 1964?

If you do, then you're long past 30 today, although 60-plus feels like the new 20-something.

Despite the ridiculous underlying premise that experience and wisdom should be eschewed rather than valued, that phrase lingered through the Summer of Love and at least until "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" socked it to us for the last time.

The absurdity of the phrase repeatedly came to mind while completing annual renewal classes for Princess, Uniworld, Norwegian, Viking, Celebrity, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, MSC and several other cruise lines in preparation for another year as a cruise consultant.

According to demographic studies, it seems that people topping 50 of age make up the lion's share of cruisers, although in the Caribbean and Mexico, younger couples and families certainly come into play, especially during school breaks.

People over 60 take most longer cruises to the most fascinating destinations.

Perhaps like me you've noticed that as a group, there are few people with greater wisdom than seasoned travelers. That's obvious when you sit down in the cruise ship dining room with strangers and listen to what they've learned during their travels.

Princess calls us "meaningful travelers," although there are many variations on the phrase.

Our years of accumulated knowledge have stimulated our curiosity to see the world and learn even more first hand.

"Don't trust anyone over 30"?

How naive --- make that outright foolish --- that concept now seems!

What's your next great experience, and what will you learn there?

"Better service leads to better trips!"
