Onboard Pacific Princess: July, 2000

Our experience onboard the aging Pacific Princess included most of the standards we have come to love on cruises, including one of our family favorites: trivia. In one of the early trivia games, Jay, Amy and I came out with a win competing against adult teams. This did not go unnoticed by Stanley, one of our table mates for evening dining, who happened to be on one of the losing teams.

From that point on, he became one of our trivia team members. As I recall, we disappointed Stanley by never winning again, but he did snag a blue ribbon in the adult ping pong tournament.

The meals on board were always delicious, and Princess put out lavish buffets for alternative dining, with the carving and arrangement of edible treats into works of art.

The children's programs provided lots of games and fun. They even toured the bridge, learning a bit about what's involved in piloting a cruise ship.

There was a small driving range onboard, although I think the only use we got out of it was taking this photo of Jay to show that there was a driving range.

In addition to having a fun cruise, Stanley and his wife Valerie of New York became new friends. A little over a year later, Stanley related a dramatic story of being in the surreal setting of New York City near the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, when he evacuated the city with thousands of other pedestrians through streets sans motor vehicle traffic through air filled with ash in the aftermath of that heinous attack on our country orchestrated by terrorists. What a long way that was from the joy of our cruise.
