Hard Rock Cafe Maui: February, 2001

On Saturday, we went snorkeling at Black Rock in the morning, truly appreciating a lack of sandblasting wind while on shore. Once again, we had great visibility and saw many beautiful fish. We walked along the Ka’anapali Ocean Walk, past the hotels to our car, which I had parked in a public lot by the Hyatt Regency. I doubt we saved any time by driving there to park rather than just walking from our condo, but we enjoyed the scenic stroll.

After lunch in the room, we went snorkeling about 6 miles north of Ka’anapali, stopping at a small access point marked by a red gate. Everyone agreed the snorkeling was fantastic. Although the quantity of fish was topped at Black Rock, we found many larger fish at this spot.

Jay’s mask began leaking through the baffle, and when I gave him min and returned to shore for a replacement, everyone in our party except me saw a large sea turtle that was supposed to have been awesome. A large eel was another favorite spotting.

We returned to our hotel, changing quickly for dinner at the Hard Rock CafĂ© in Lahaina. Several in our group had Pig Sandwiches (BBQ pork), while other selections included Kendra’s French Dip, Jay’s Hamburger, Jacque’s Ahi Sandwich, Amy’s Caesar Salad and my own Oriental Salad. All of us enjoyed our meals. The memorabilia and music was as cool as other Hard Rock Cafes, and the prices were reasonable, with entrees at about $9 and sodas at $2.29 with free refills. After dinner, another shopping stroll through Lahaina where we found Tom Barefoot’s Cashback Tours, which offers substantial discounts for most events with no strings---READ AS NO MANDATORY TIME-SHARE PRESENTATION REQUIRED---attached. We booked a self-guided bike tour (Option 2).

I will never forget seeing that big green eel with dark green markings. The way it nimbly powered its way through the water & around the coral reefs was beautiful to watch.
