Destiny at Sea: October, 2000

Thursday, we had a day at sea, so we decided to have breakfast in the Galaxy Dining Room. I enjoyed an excellent meal of baked apple with cinnamon, eggs benedict, orange juice and coffee.

After breakfast, we played a trivia game at 9:00 AM in the Palladium Lounge, trying to win the hightly coveted solid gold painted plastic ship on a stick.

At 10:00 AM, we went to a country line dancing class on the Lido Deck.

We returned to Happy Valley for lunch, where I had shrimp fried rice, lo-mein, and Cantonese chicken. The portions were on the small side, so I went to Sun and Sea and got beef stroganoff and Thai chicken, too.

We enjoyed a leisurely afternoon of reading, lounging in the sun, going down the water slide, looking in on the art auction and taking an occasional dip in the pool.

We attended the hilarious "Marriage Game," where some naturally funny people were made funnier by our cruise director Greg's quick wit. One passenger was totally hilarious. His wife had said he proposed very romantically, so Greg brought him up on stage. From the moment this big guy said "Whassup" to the moment he went off the stage, it was hysterical. He looked like a fat reject from a beer commercial, but he turned out to be an attorney who managed to one-up Greg, the host, so many times that Greg handed him the microphone and went to the audience.

We attended a happy hour cocktail party from 5 to 6 PM with live jazz and $2.75 drinks on this, the second formal night. For dinner, I had penne pasta, etoufee du langastine and grilled shrimp. The grilled shrimp was good, but overall the meal rated three stars. Julie had penne pasta, Caesar salad and delicious Chateaubriand, a five star meal. I don’t know why I resist ordering steak when it turns out to be the best entrĂ©e so regularly. The waiters performed the Macarena for us that night before serving baked Alaska.

After dinner, we went nightclub hopping, eventually making it over to the Palladium for the second big production show of the trip, "Nightclub Express." The first show was fantastic, but this one surpassed it. The crowd really got into this, and it became like a great rock concert where everybody's clapping, dancing and singing along. A couple of the highlights were "Copa Cabana" and "YMCA." There also was a mass Macarena, where everybody in the packed two level auditorium was dancing. It was one of the best shows I've ever experienced.

After the show, we went nightclub hopping again, dancing to the Philippine rock band and then going to the piano bar, where John, a guy who looked and acted a lot like Bruce Willis, played and sang some classic songs made famous by artists like Elton John and Billy Joel in between his jocular banter.

I will definitely spend a lot more time in the piano bar next time I'm on Carnival.

We finally headed back to the room and watched Jay Leno before falling asleep.
